Updated StatsHOBOKEN, NJ – The second-seeded Nazareth College women's soccer team conceded a goal late in the Empire 8 semifinals, falling 2-1 to third-seeded Ithaca College at Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday.
With the loss, Nazareth snaps a 13-year streak of appearing in the Empire 8 Championship game. The Golden Flyers fall to 12-3-3 on the year, while the Bombers improve to 15-3-1. Nazareth will wait to see if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
Ithaca didn't take long to get on the board, as Holly Niemiec netted a tally just four minutes in. Niemiec took a long pass cross field pass from Sarah Woychik and was able to convert the opportunity.
Nazareth managed to net an equalizer in the 22
nd minute, stringing together a series of passes, before
Danielle Wilkin ripped a shot from outside the 18-yard box. Wilkin, seeing her first action since October 10
th, had her shot slightly tipped by the Ithaca goaltender before going in off the far post.
The Bombers nearly regained the lead late in the first half after a shot hit off the crossbar. Nazareth and Ithaca remained tied 1-1 at the half.
After each squad mustered seven shots in the opening half, Ithaca outshot the Golden Flyers 7-2 in the second.
The Bombers were able to break the tie in the 84
th minute, as Woychick netted the eventual game-winner.
Allison Dobles made five saves in net for Nazareth.
