Nazareth Runs At Highlander Short Course Invitational

Women edge Fisher for first; men finish second

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Nazareth men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Houghton on Friday to compete at the Houghton Highlander Short Course Invitational. The women's team won the meet by four points over St. John Fisher, recording a score of 34 compared to the Cardinals' score of 38. The men's team took second behind Fisher. The Golden Flyer men tallied 50 points compared to the Cardinals' score of 28.

In the women's 3,200-meter race, junior Gabrielle LeBihan and sophomore Emily Thompson took second and third place, respectively. Lebihan finished with a time of 12:03.3, and Thompson crossed the line at 12:06.6. Following the top two Nazareth finishers, the Golden Flyers had a group round out their scoring. The pack consisted of sophomore Jamie DiSalvo, who was ninth overall (13:09.3), junior Robin Wagner in 13th (13:18.7), freshman Kimmy Lovett in 14th (13:21.6), junior Blair Meeson in 15th (13:23.6), freshman Claire Ludington in 16th (13:34.5), and senior Michaela Gildemeyer in 17th (13:34.9). Freshman Andrea Larnard and senior Kassandra Lathrop rounded out the Golden Flyers' finishers with 23rd and 30th-place finishes, respectively. Larnard crossed the line at 14:10.6 while Lathrop finished with a time of 15:13.1.

Following Nazareth and St. John Fisher, Houghton took third in the women's meet with a team score of 54 points.

In the men's 5,000-meter race, freshman Kevin Witt was Nazareth's top finisher as he placed sixth overall with a time of 17:01.4. The Golden Flyers' next runners across the finish line were sophomore Matt Battaglia in ninth-place (17:45.9), junior Patrick Neureuter in 10th-place (17:48.4), and sophomore Thomas Lannon in 11th (17:55.1). Classmate Jacob Murray finished just after Lannon in 14th-place (18:01.8), and he was followed by freshman Kristopher Newell in 18th (18:59.7) and sophomore Ethan Osborne in 34th (19:41.6).

After Fisher and Nazareth, Alfred University claimed third in the men's race with 70 team points. Finger Lakes CC was fourth with 101 points, and Houghton was fifth with 119 points.

The Golden Flyers are in action again on Saturday, September 6th when Nazareth travels to the Hamilton Invitational.
