Nazareth runs at Empire 8 Championships

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Golden Flyers' women's and men's cross country teams were in action at the Empire 8 Championships at Saratoga on Saturday. Sophomore Gabrielle LeBihan placed third overall in the women's five-kilometer race with a time of 18:07. Senior Matt Fedrizzi was the first Nazareth runner to cross the finish line in the men's eight-kilometer race. Fedrizzi finished 23rd overall and posted a time of 27:24.

Ithaca won the women's race with a total score of 29 points. The Bombers put five runners in the top nine places to claim first. Stevens followed in second with 74 points, and Nazareth was third with 88 points.

LeBihan's time of 18:07 breaks former Nazareth runner Jess Brown's five-kilometer school record of 18:14. Brown's record had stood since 2007. Both girls set the record on the same course. LeBihan's third-place finish earned her first-team all-conference honors.

Graduate student Lauren Jamieson was the second Nazareth runner across the line as she finished 14th with a time of 18:53. Jamieson received second-team all-conference honors. Freshman Emily Thompson was 20th overall in 19:05, and she was followed by senior Lauren Heitzhaus in 24th-place (19:25) and sophomore Blair Meeson in 32nd place (19:39).

Junior Michaela Gildemeyer was 35th (19:41) and freshman Jamie DiSalvo was 46th (20:02). Junior Kassandra Lathrop and freshman Kelly Maloney rounded out the Golden Flyers' finishers. Lathrop was 63rd with a time of 21:11 while Maloney was 76th with a time of 21:54.

In the men's meet, Ithaca also won the team title with a combined score of 44 points. Utica was second with 62 points followed by Stevens with 67 points. Nazareth placed sixth with a team score of 168 points.

Following Fedrizzi was senior Jake Lafaver in 50th with a time of 29:03. Sophomore Patrick Neureuter and freshman Ethan Osborne were the next two Golden Flyers to finish, and they were separated by only a second. Neureuter was 51st with a time of 29:16 while Osborne was 52nd with a time of 29:17. Freshman Matt Battaglia was the fifth Nazareth runner to cross the finish line as he placed 57th with a time of 29:42.

Senior Zack Lafaver was 58th (29:47) followed by freshman Jacob Murray in 61st (29:53) and classmate Thomas Lannon in 76th (31:24).

The Golden Flyers are in action again on November 16th when Nazareth runs at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals at Letchworth State Park.
