Nazareth records first swimming win

Women's team improves to 8-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Rob Wortel and freshman Mike Bidwell each won two events and swam on a winning relay Saturday as host Nazareth recorded its first victory of the season in men's swimming and diving, topping Utica, 183-74. The Golden Flyers also swam against St. Lawrence and lost by a close score of 135-120.

In the women's meet, Nazareth won twice to improve to 8-0 in dual meets. The Golden Flyers outscored Utica 196-76 and St. Lawrence 168.5-113.5.

Wortel won the 50-meter freestyle (:25.05) and the 100-meter freestyle (:55.75) while Bidwell captured the 100-meter breaststroke (1:11.33) and the 200-meter breaststroke (2:36.55). They both were part of the winning 400-meter medley relay that also included senior #R.C. Weston and freshman Jacob Kline# which posted a time of 4:09.01.

Nazareth also got a first-place finish from freshman Kline in the 100-meter butterfly (1:01.25) and from senior Eric Lenhardt in his first-ever appearance in 1-meter diving (145.75).

Nazareth received a pair of second-place finishes from Weston, who competed in both backstroke events. He swam 1:03.28 in the 100 and 2:19.49 in the 200. Sophomore Dan Walton also placed second in the 100 freestyle (:57.40).

In the women's meet, freshman Carissa Risucci won three races, including the 200-meter breaststroke, in which she improved upon her own school record with a winning time of 2:43.86. She won the 100-meter breaststroke (1:16.89) and the 200-meter IM (2:31.63).

Nazareth shattered the school and pool records in the 400-meter free relay with the foursome of Rachael Phipps, McKenna Murphy, Lauren McKinney and Jaclyn Conklin. Their time of 4:08.84 broke the pool record by nearly four seconds.

Conklin# also won two other events -- the 100-meter backstroke (1:12.67) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:47.90) -- and senior Lindsey Buzard won both diving events. She scored 206.60 on the 1-meter and 202.00 on the 3-meter.

Other winners were senior Courtney Pilc in the 800-meter freestyle (10:03.42); Phipps in the 100-meter freestyle (1:01.04) and McKinney in the 100-meter butterfly (1:07.35). In addition, Nazareth captured the 400 medley relay with McKinney, Phipps, Murphy and Jeanne Falco in 4:46.34.

Nazareth closes out its dual-meet schedule Saturday at RIT at 1 p.m.
