ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Ithaca senior Amy Scheffer scored the game's only goal in the 23rd minute Saturday to lift the eighth-ranked Bombers to a 1-0 women's soccer victory over host Nazareth at Golden Flyer Stadium.
The victory was Ithaca's fifth straight over the Golden Flyers, who lost for the first time in Empire 8 Conference play. Nazareth is 6-4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8. Ithaca improved to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in conference games.
The game was even statistically in the first half with each team generating seven shots. Scheffer's shot, however, was the one that counted most as she accepted a pass from Lauren Koppel, faked a Nazareth defender and fired a shot from the top of the box and past Nazareth keeper
Hillary Simon.
Nazareth had good chances to score in each half, but came away empty. Freshman
Christine Belding had an opportunity in the 18th minute as she dribbled in close, but her shot sailed high over the goal. Then in the second half, with Nazareth desperately trying to get the tying goal, junior
Erica Conte had a shot that caromed off the crossbar.
Ithaca had advantages in shots (17-11) and corner kicks (5-2). Simon made seven saves for the Golden Flyers, while junior Alyssa Sotomayor had six saves for the Bombers to earn her third shutout of the season.
Nazareth plays again Sunday at home against Elmira at 1 p.m.
