Nazareth defeats Ithaca, falls to RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth completed its regular-season women's volleyball schedule Sunday by splitting a pair of matches at the New York State Regional Challenge hosted by RIT.

The Golden Flyers won a five-set match with Ithaca in the morning, outlasting the Bombers by scores of 20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 15-12. In the afternoon match, Nazareth fell to RIT in three sets 25-20, 25-20, 25-19. That leaves the Golden Flyers with an overall record of 28-9.

Nazareth travels to Hoboken, N.J. next Saturday to compete in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament hosted by Stevens. Nazareth, seeded second, hosts third-seeded St. John Fisher at 2:30 p.m. in the first semifinal. Stevens plays RIT in the other semifinal at 12 p.m. The championship match is Saturday at 7 p.m. The winner gains an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

In the Ithaca match, Nazareth got 11 kills apiece from senior Laura Persico and junior Katelynn Reed. Junior Kate Zwickl added 45 assists and junior libero Mallorie Clary contributed 21 digs.

In the RIT match, junior Carra Vanderstyne posted 11 kills and six digs and Reed added 10 kills and two blocks. Zwickl contributed 35 assists and Clary had 16 digs.
